Using iDrive for over 3 months; recommended

I have been using iDrive for over 3 months. I purchased the 5TB option at the discount price. I have two separate systems -- Windows 7 and Windows 10 for which it backs up approx. 350GB and 650GB, respectively. I have had zero issues with the Windows 10 instance; it just works. I had a couple small issues with the Windows 7 instance but tech support was very responsive and helped me figure out what I needed to change to resolve it. The sync capability works great to support files being readily available on any sync'd system. Great alternative to Google Drive if you're willing to pay a little for a product that includes tech support instead of *being* the product and have no tech support.

I have been using IDrive for years and…

I have been using IDrive for years and have not had issues until the last week where my account is constantly under maintenance. I opened a ticket but have had no resolution yet. Just the response that the problem is being worked on. There should be daily meaningful updates for users with issues. I have read other posts in other places that users wait weeks and weeks who have the issue I am having. I hope this is not the case now.

excellent!

I've been using iDrive for 4yrs now, it's excellent, as advertised. It's very fast on the local disk backup. It's slow on online backup but that's because of the upload bandwidth of the local ADSL connection. It's very fast and efficient after the first upload is concluded. Do not use it to backup on the cloud huge mailbox files (several GBs) that change every few minutes (like thunderbird mailboxes) , it's not for that use, use the local backup option instead for these files.

Bad Business Scammers

Unfortunately there are no negative star ratings available. iDrive is slow, unreliable, and worst of all they are scammers. Do business with them at your own risk.I did the trial membership for $15. Then I was charged $60 on my credit card. There was no option to cancel when viewing my account online and the online chat is a nonexistent joke. When I called, the representative stated he could not "find" my account, even though iDrive had just billed my credit card that very same day (credit card company sent me notification). I was instructed to cancel again online, whilst there was still no method of doing so. Then they would NOT CANCEL my account, but said they would "try" to get a prorated refund to my credit card--although I called the same day they charged my credit card.Oh, and why did I cancel? Because the upload is so slow it is completely worthless--it does not backup files, simply slows down other functions.***********UPDATEI was contacted by iDrive after providing the review of my bad experiences. They promised to correct the problem, and sent an email with information on how to be refunded the credit card charge, which required a phone call. I am happy to report that the refund actually occurred, there are no residual charges on my credit card, and they have redeemed themselves.

iDrive from my QNAP NAS and Linux - works perfectly inc. restore.

I run iDrive from my QNAP NAS, and also from a number of linux client PCs, and it's backing up approx 1.5Tb of data. I made use of the iDrive express service, and they sent a HDD from USA to my home in the UK, I uploaded my data securely and sent it back. It all worked seamlessly, and linked in nicely with the app doing updates.I've done some intensive restore tests, and tested the versioning backup (CDP) and it's all good. After nearly a year and extensive testing I'm very happy with the way it works. The linux software is (if you're into terminal) superb. Can't comment on windows software.I'd like to add a little balance in the light of the negativity. Looking at this from an IT admin perspective, there are a lot of negative comments from people who clearly haven't read the documentation or are guessing how backup should work. One reviewer was even annoyed that files he'd deleted on his PC were still present in the backup. (How else do you recover from malicious or accidental deletions?) - And plenty more misunderstandings.This is complex subject and you can't just plug-and-play your way to data integrity. The Wikipedia page on "Backup" is over 6,900 words, without getting into technical detail. Any services that do propose you can have total backup in just a few clicks are not giving you the whole truth. For instance you can't have live replication for fast clean restore, protection from ransomware attacks and also protection from accidental deletions in the same service - they will conflict with each other. Some reviewers are being a bit 'entitled' and insisting this service should make all the decisions and do all the work for them. We have to learn which type of protection we want and which compromises we are happy to accept.

updated: not as bad as I thought.

Updated: Well the files were actually in a folder labeled Idrive and they were organized according to the folders that I previously had on my MacBook. It took a little while longer then having the ability to do it automatically, but I was able to get everything back to where it goes with some work. I was a little harsh in my first review. Mainly out of frustration. I talked with a tech, but support was outsourced out of country. The product is great, but the tech really did not understand what I was asking him to help me with. I ended up hanging up and figured it out on my own. I would still like to see Idrive put them same effort into their Mac restoration process as they have with Windows. Overall this is a good product!Original review: The back up part went great and worked flawlessly. However, when I had to replace the hard drive on my macbook pro, I thought no worries, I have a backup. To some this might not seem like a big deal, but Idrive downloaded 500 gigs of data in one folder and now I have to sort through that and figure out where everything will go. I can't imagine how long this is going to take. IDrive took the time to build an option for windows so that everything restores correctly, but not for mac.

Doesn't mirror local data

Great price point. Backup speed was OK. Customer support was good (via online chat). Not right for my needs however, because iDrive doesn't mirror your current local files, meaning any data restore is polluted with previously deleted local data. There is a partial workaround: manually clicking the Cleanup Now button periodically, but this only cleans up files (not folders) and doesn't work on network or external drives. I'm moving on to another solution.

Not a hotel california for me

So I want to argue in favour of iDrive unlike many others here.Three weeks ago I signed up for the 2TB plan which is heavily discounted if you're a student (35$ per year).But then I realized that I wanted more control of my cloud space so I changed my credit card informations (as I was scared by the negative reviews about some undesired charges from iDrive) and I proceeded to cancel my account and then moved to Amazon S3.Guess what happened: they gave me back 28$ and proceeded to cancel my account.I've never restored a previous backup so I can't tell you if it's quick or not, but I can assure you that (at least for me) it wasn't an "Hotel California" situation and they were honest.
