Very interesting

Very interesting, a little bit hit and miss as you are given options of ancestors which may or may not be correct.

Worth the price to find your family history

When there's an offer on or you are just starting to look into your family history this is the perfect site to do so. Lots of hints, resources and easy searches. The further you get into your family history gets a little more complicated.Fair price and lots of free events to continue your search.Likewise the customer service is quick, informative and super polite .

Ancestry versus FMP

Ancestry versus FMP. I am a member of both FMP and Ancestry and I have recently been looking for births, marriages and deaths all the way back to the 1500s. FMP: I am amazed at the work that has gone into taking the images of the numerous pages in the parish registers. Someone has had to decipher the names enclosed all from often faint, torn and badly marked pages. These names are then shown in a transcripts along the bottom, making it easier to skim through the pages to find an ancestor. I have found so many records it has been well worth the subscription. Ancestry: Often with this site all that is given are the names, date and place of the event without the option of viewing an actual parish record. Sometimes you are lucky but on the whole there is nothing to view. FMP: fall down with its family tree which I find hard to use whilst here Ancestry wins as it is excellent and easy to add too. Census records 1841 to 1911: FIP wins here as it gives a translation of the actual record, so you get both the census record and a translation which gives lots of extra information whereas Ancestry only shows the one record with a simple translation often with faults. Census 1921 – that can only be found on FIP – again you get the main census record costing £3.50 and the translation for £2.50 – total £6. The problem is that you can waste your money if you have picked an incorrect person as it is not always easier to see. Ancestry: There is a lot of inaccurate information on this site and you can easily end up on the wrong track. For example I had a relation whose father lived in Stoke on Trent and her mother was from Quebec, I was amazed at the large number of family trees that had copied this untrue information. So many members don’t even think what they are copying – some entries had offspring at the age of 8 years and others had given birth long after their death date. Also the default on Ancestry is for the USA and I had to clear out lots of incorrect information that was just impossible. After researching historical documents I find that some people added in actually had no issue, yet still Ancestry keeps on hinting that they do. Just because 7 family trees say the same thing doesn’t mean it is true. I find you get a better tree if you only add branches in after researching first and to never believe information unless you have a citation. Both sites have silly translations but I think Ancestry has the most faults - such as Eather instead of Esther, often place names are spelt incorrectly on the their censuses, faults which could have easily been checked before entry. Ancestry even has in the 1891 census my great grandmother married to her brother and even after I reported the error it has never been changed. I have even written an email to Ancestry but just got an automated reply, as they are weren’t bothered. FIP had the same 1891 census record and even they had manged to interpret it correctly. We are lucky to have both FMP and Ancestry and whilst both have their pros and cons they are both good in their own way.

A very professional service

A very professional service, which very honestly makes its limitations clear, and so does not promise more than it delivers. I particularly recommend the DNA service and results.

Very good site that is easy to use with lots of useful tabs, such as merging duplicate entries. Layout for linked relatives is clearly displayed on one page and easy to understand. Very good for census records with copies of the originals and transcripts available, unlike some other sites. My favourite site for being user-friendly but other sites offer some other benefits not available on Ancestry so it's a good idea to swap between different sites.
